Arooj Aftab is the first Pakistani woman to be nominated for the Best New Artist category.

‘Mohabbat,’ a song that Barack Obama picked as one of his summer playlist favorites for 2021, has garnered Pakistani performer-composer Arooj Aftab two nominations in the 64th Grammy Awards’ star-studded nominations list, which were announced at a live-streamed online event on Tuesday morning (US Pacific Time).

Aftab, who sang the title song for Meghna Gulzar’s 2015 thriller drama ‘Talvar,’ is the first Pakistani woman to be nominated a Best New Artist contender.

She’s up against nine other breakout artists, including The Kid LAROI, Arlo Parks, and Olivia Rodrigo, in a competitive field. Her song ‘Mohabbat’ has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance.

Barack Obama, who is primarily responsible for Aftab’s international recognition, is one of the 80-plus nominees (his third shot at a Grammy after 2006 and 2008).

The former US President’s audiobook, ‘A Promised Land,’ has entered the shortlist for Best Spoken Word Album, beating out the now-controversial comedian (and three-time Grammy winner) Dave Chappelle, LeVar Burton, Don Cheadle, and J. Ivy.
