According to official figures, China’s economy grew at a record pace in the first quarter, continuing the country’s swift comeback from last year’s pandemic-fueled recession.
The 18.3% increase in gross domestic output was the fastest since quarterly records began three decades ago, although it followed a historic drop in 2020 when the pandemic was at its peak.
Retail sales jumped in March, boosting first-quarter growth to 33.9 percent as life generally returned to normal, indicating that the country’s key consumer sector is getting back on track.
In the third quarter, industrial output increased by a lower-than-expected 24.5 percent.
