The United States and Britain warned their nationals to avoid stays in Afghanistan’s hotels, After Friday attack in mosque where dozens people were killed and many other injured which is claimed by Islamic State (IS).
The Taliban, who took control in August and announced an Islamic emirate, are seeking international recognition and support in hopes of preventing a humanitarian crisis and helping Afghanistan’s economic problems.
However, as the organization evolves from a rebel army to a dominating force, it is trying to manage the threats faced by the IS chapter in Afghanistan.
According to the US State Department, “US citizens who are in or near the Serena Hotel should evacuate immediately,” citing “security threats” in the region.
“You are recommended not to remain in hotels, particularly in Kabul (such as the Serena Hotel) because of the increasing risks,” the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office of the United Kingdom stated.
Many foreigners have fled Afghanistan since the Taliban assumed power, but some journalists and social activists have remained in the city.
The well-known Serena, a high-end hotel popular with business travelers and foreign visitors, has been attacked by the Taliban twice.
