Nicaragua Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Israel, Labels Government “Fascist” and “Genocidal”

Nicaragua announced on Friday that it is officially severing diplomatic relations with Israel, citing the Israeli government’s “fascist” and “genocidal” actions. The Nicaraguan government stated that this decision is in response to Israel’s ongoing military operations in Palestinian territories.

Earlier in the day, Nicaragua’s congress passed a resolution urging the government to take action, aligning with the one-year anniversary of the Gaza conflict. The Nicaraguan statement emphasized that the current Israeli conflict also poses threats to Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iran.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated significantly after Iran launched missiles at Israel on October 1. Iran, a close ally of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, shares strong political ties with the Central American nation. Nicaragua has faced increasing international isolation, particularly after Ortega’s government violently suppressed anti-government protests in 2018, leaving approximately 300 dead, according to human rights organizations.

This diplomatic break marks a significant geopolitical shift amid ongoing regional instability.
