Argentine football legend Lionel Messi equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the most international hat-tricks on Tuesday, scoring his 10th career hat-trick as Argentina thrashed Bolivia 6-0 in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The 36-year-old star reached this milestone in front of a jubilant home crowd at the Monumental stadium. In just his second international appearance since recovering from a Copa America injury in July, Messi capitalized on a defensive error by Marcelo Suarez to score the opening goal in the 19th minute.
Bolivia’s goalkeeper, Guillermo Viscarra, made several key saves but couldn’t stop Lautaro Martinez from doubling Argentina’s lead in the 43rd minute after a quick cross from Messi. Just before halftime, Messi set up Julian Alvarez for Argentina’s third goal.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner completed his hat-trick with a powerful left-footed strike, bringing his international goal tally to 112.
Reflecting on the game, Messi said, “It’s amazing to feel the love of the fans here. It’s what motivates me. Despite my age, being with this team makes me feel like a kid. As long as I feel good and can perform at my best, I’ll keep enjoying this.”
With this win, Argentina sits atop the standings with 22 points, bouncing back from a loss to Colombia and a draw with Venezuela in their previous matches. The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
