New Zealand claimed their first Test victory in India since 1988 with a commanding eight-wicket win, chasing down 107 runs to seal the result on the final day of the rain-affected series opener on Sunday.

After bowling India out for their lowest-ever home total of 46 and responding with 402 in their first innings, New Zealand dismissed Rohit Sharma’s side for 462 in the second innings on Saturday, setting the stage for a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Rachin Ravindra and Will Young remained composed under pressure, guiding New Zealand to only their third win on Indian soil in 38 attempts since 1955, despite the loss of two early wickets.

The visitors got off to a shaky start when play resumed after a rain delay, with new skipper Tom Latham trapped lbw by Jasprit Bumrah for a duck on the second ball of the day, leaving the tourists without a run on the board.

Bumrah and pacer Mohammed Siraj applied early pressure on the New Zealand batters, as India aimed to pull off the unprecedented feat of winning a Test after conceding a first-innings lead of over 350 runs.

Conway faced a barrage of body blows, close misses, and intense stares from the bowlers, amid jeers from the home crowd at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, before being dismissed lbw by Bumrah for 17.

However, the pitch seemed to settle after his wicket, allowing New Zealand to cruise to a historic victory.
