ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Ameen Gandapur expressed optimism on Tuesday about Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s release, insisting that PTI’s stance remains non-confrontational toward institutions or any individuals, including the military and its leadership. Instead, he noted that PTI seeks reforms within these institutions, particularly in terms of policies they believe need correction.
During his conversation with The News, Gandapur neither confirmed nor denied his role in Bushra Bibi’s release, who was freed on a court order. He firmly stated that PTI has no intentions of making or entering any “deals” and dismissed any notion of compromises for political gain. Gandapur explained that Bushra Bibi’s release came through legal channels, as the court dismissed what he termed “false cases” against her. He suggested that Imran Khan’s cases are similarly baseless, expressing confidence that Khan would soon regain his freedom.
When asked about the party’s policy on recent military criticisms, Gandapur clarified that PTI’s struggle is peaceful, staying within the boundaries of the law and constitution. He added that PTI would continue its efforts to secure an inquiry into the February 8 elections and the May 9 incidents.
Meanwhile, PTI sources alleged Gandapur may have been instrumental in Bushra Bibi’s release, claiming he had assured party leaders she would not be detained in further cases. Gandapur’s spokesperson, Barrister Saif, confirmed that the chief minister had discussed his involvement in her release but did not specify the nature of his role.
In a separate video statement, Gandapur accused the federal and Punjab governments of mistreating Imran Khan in prison, including depriving him of essential needs like electricity and adequate meals. He issued a stern warning, vowing to “shut down the country” if Khan’s treatment continued to worsen, and criticized the federal government, accusing it of “stealing” the PTI mandate. Gandapur warned that PTI supporters are ready to escalate their protests if Khan’s mistreatment persists, while also stressing that no tolerance would be shown towards any party member who betrayed Khan.
