Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for sidelining explosive opener Fakhar Zaman, following his omission from the squads announced for the South Africa tour on December 4. Fakhar was also excluded from the central contracts and recent tours of Australia and Zimbabwe.

Speaking on a local news channel, Akhtar emphasized Fakhar Zaman importance in white-ball cricket and called for his reinstatement in the lineup.

“Fakhar Zaman is a talented, mature, and committed player, benched unnecessarily due to ego battles,” Akhtar stated. “You’ll need him eventually—if not today, then tomorrow.”

Akhtar also advised Fakhar to focus on improving his fitness and performance on the field rather than making public statements. “Let your bat do the talking. Avoid unnecessary remarks and prove yourself with consistent displays,” he added.

While Akhtar blamed Fakhar’s exclusion on internal disputes, Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Mohammad Rizwan, denied any personal bias in the decision.

“Everyone knows Fakhar Zaman’s value. There’s nothing personal against him,” Rizwan said in a PCB-released video. “He’s a unique player and a game-changer, and we all remain hopeful for his return.”

Fakhar Zaman last represented Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June 2024.
