Govt, PTI Open to Dialogue Despite Ongoing Tensions
Amid ongoing political tensions, there are indications that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are open to dialogue despite public disagreements. Sources suggest that both sides recognize the need to address the country’s political uncertainty through negotiations.
Potential for Talks Between Rivals
Although formal discussions have not started, progress has reportedly been made behind the scenes. PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, who wields significant influence, appears willing to consider negotiations with PTI founder Imran Khan, despite his previous opposition. Sharif and his daughter, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, had earlier dismissed the possibility of dialogue, branding PTI as disruptive. However, a senior PML-N leader has hinted at a potential shift in Sharif’s stance.
Challenges and Key Issues
Currently, both sides accuse each other of insincerity. PTI alleges that the government is not serious about negotiations, while the government insists talks cannot proceed under threats of civil disobedience or strict deadlines. Events from November 26, including PTI’s march to Islamabad’s D-Chowk, have further strained relations, creating a hostile environment for discussions.
Despite this, sources claim there is a consensus that maintaining the status quo is unsustainable. Reducing political tensions through dialogue is seen as essential. Both the government and the establishment acknowledge PTI’s popularity and the importance of Imran Khan’s involvement in any reconciliation effort.
Conditions for Progress
The government is reportedly cautious, fearing that Khan could destabilize the political system even after negotiations. Success will require compromise on both sides. PTI may need to abandon its demand for immediate elections, while the government could step back from efforts to exclude Khan from politics. There is speculation that early elections might be considered if PTI agrees to maintain stability for the next two to three years.
Steps Toward Dialogue
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has offered to mediate, and sources indicate a parliamentary committee might be formed to oversee formal talks. The committee would be tasked with deliberating on key negotiation points and facilitating discussions between the government and PTI.
Prime Minister’s aide on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, has also hinted at progress, stating that discussions about forming a government committee for talks are underway. However, Sanaullah emphasized that while issues like the release of under-trial political prisoners and a judicial probe into recent events can be discussed, the acceptance of specific demands cannot be guaranteed.
PTI’s Ultimatum
Meanwhile, Imran Khan has warned that PTI will launch a civil disobedience movement if their demands, including the release of political prisoners and a judicial inquiry into the May 9 and November 26 incidents, are not met by December 22.
Despite ongoing verbal sparring, both the government and PTI seem to recognize the importance of dialogue to navigate the current political crisis.
