Novak Djokovic Alleges Poisoning During 2022 Melbourne Stay Amid COVID-19 Controversy

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has claimed he was allegedly “poisoned” during his brief stay in Melbourne in January 2022, at the height of the COVID-19 vaccination controversy.

The allegations refer to Djokovic’s detention and subsequent deportation from Australia in 2022 after his vaccination status led to his visa cancellation. Speaking in an interview with GQ magazine, Djokovic disclosed, “I had some health issues and realized that during my stay in the hotel in Melbourne, I was served food that poisoned me.” He added, “I had a really high level of lead and mercury,” sharing the revelation for the first time.

The incident occurred when Australia had stringent COVID-19 entry rules, barring unvaccinated individuals from entering the country. Djokovic fought a legal battle to stay and compete in the Australian Open but was ultimately deported.

Despite the controversy, Djokovic has expressed no resentment toward Australians. “Many Australians I’ve met, either in the country or abroad, have apologised for the treatment I received, saying they were embarrassed by their government’s actions,” he stated.

Djokovic returned to Melbourne in 2023, winning the Australian Open, marking one of his 10 titles at the tournament and contributing to his record 24 Grand Slam wins.

Looking ahead to the 2025 Australian Open, Djokovic will open his campaign against Indian-origin American teenager Nishesh Basavareddy. He may face No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals and potentially No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

This year, Djokovic will also be guided by a new coach, former rival and Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.
