Members of the European Parliament have called on the European Union to make renewed efforts to restore good neighborly relations between Pakistan and India based on the principles of international law.

These views were expressed by the members on the occasion of the adoption of a report on EU-India relations presented in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, which received 61 votes in favor. 6 members opposed while 4 members did not exercise their right to vote.

In this report, the committee members present their recommendations for the EU in the context of the May 8 meeting between the EU and Indian leadership in Porto, Portugal.

The report, prepared by Finland’s Elvina Almetsa MEP, presents relations with India from two different perspectives.

Part of the report, entitled Conflict Prevention, Peace and Regional Stability, says that the EU is closely monitoring the situation in Kashmir and is committed to reducing and stabilizing tensions between Pakistan and India in this regard. Repeats

At the same time, the members expressed grave concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in India in the light of various reports submitted by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and other UN agencies.

According to MPs, these reports state that there is no safe working environment for human rights defenders and journalists in India.

Also about the plight of Indian women, minority groups, caste discrimination in India, and the closure of Amnesty International’s India office and its bank accounts in the name of alleged violations of FCRA law. Expressed concerns.

Members noted that the FCRA is a law that three UN special envoys have asked India to amend.

The report, presented to the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, raised alarm over India’s citizenship amendment law, the CAA, saying that according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, The law is primarily discriminatory against Muslims and dangerously divisive in society.

The MPs reviewed the deteriorating relations between India and China and expressed concern over the need for peaceful resolution of disputes, the need for constructive and comprehensive dialogue, and international law on the Indo-China border. He also reiterated his support for the party.

In the second part of the report presented to the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, members of the European Parliament said that Europe and India are two major democratic parties. They have strong political, economic, social, and cultural ties as strategic partners and have vast potential to grow.

Members of the European Parliament described India as an important trading partner and highlighted various aspects of its regional and geographical role.

These parliamentarians suggested to the European Union that Europe should further improve and deepen its relations with India. This part of the report also supports the need for closer trade relations between the two sides and the need to work together to reform the WTO.

At the same time, emphasis has been placed on environmental goals, public health and the fight against global epidemics, private and public investment, enhancing connectivity, data security, and enhancing partnerships in digital services.
