A.R. Rahman and Saira Banu Announce Separation After 29 Years of Marriage
Bollywood maestro and Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their separation after nearly three decades of marriage. The couple, who tied the knot on March 12, 1995, share three children.
On November 19, Rahman posted a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his emotions during this difficult time. He wrote:
“We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”
Meanwhile, Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vanda Shah, confirmed the separation in an official statement, citing emotional strain as the reason. The statement read:
“Despite their deep love for each other, the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them. Mrs. Saira has taken this decision out of pain and agony and requests privacy and understanding during this challenging time.”
The couple’s children, Ameen and Khatija Rahman, also addressed the matter on social media, requesting privacy and respect. Ameen wrote on Instagram, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.” Khatija echoed similar sentiments, asking for the issue to be treated with sensitivity.
Earlier, Rahman had shared personal struggles from his youth, revealing at the Oxford Union Debating Society that he had contemplated suicide multiple times. He credited his mother’s advice for helping him find purpose in living for others, which transformed his outlook on life.
This chapter marks a poignant moment in the legendary musician’s life as he and his family navigate this period with grace and dignity.
