Former Pakistan captain Azhar Ali has been appointed as the new Head of Youth Development by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The PCB announced the decision through an official statement, highlighting that Azhar Ali, who is also part of the National Selection Committee, was selected for the role through a structured recruitment process.
In his new position, Azhar will be tasked with formulating and executing a comprehensive strategy to bolster youth cricket in Pakistan. This includes strengthening grassroots cricket infrastructure, supporting regional associations, and enhancing age-group development programs. He will also oversee education and training for young cricketers under the PCB’s pathway initiatives and organize seminars and clinics focused on off-field development.
Expressing pride and enthusiasm for his new role, Azhar emphasized his dedication to nurturing emerging talent and shaping the future of Pakistan cricket.
The PCB congratulated Azhar Ali on his appointment, expressing confidence that his extensive experience and vision will drive the growth of youth cricket across the country.
Azhar Ali’s illustrious career began in 2002 when he played in the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Between 2010 and 2022, he represented Pakistan in 97 Test matches and 53 One-Day Internationals. As a captain, he led the national team in 9 Tests and 31 ODIs and was a key player in Pakistan’s victorious ICC Champions Trophy campaign in 2017.
In related news, the PCB has declined the resignation of former Test cricketer Mohammad Yousuf, who recently stepped down as a selector for the Pakistan national team. Instead, the board is offering Yousuf a choice of two to three new roles, aiming to retain his expertise.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, during a press conference, reiterated the board’s commitment to keeping Yousuf involved. He stated, “We are not letting Yousuf go anywhere,” and highlighted Yousuf’s continued contributions, particularly in preparations for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
This strategic move reflects the PCB’s focus on leveraging experienced cricketing figures to enhance the development and success of Pakistan cricket at all levels.
