BCCI Issues Strict Guidelines for Indian Cricketers to Ensure Discipline and Team Unity
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a ten-point policy for contracted male cricketers, aiming to enhance discipline, team cohesion, and a positive atmosphere. This initiative comes in the wake of India’s recent underwhelming performances in Test matches.
Titled “Policy Document for Team India (Senior Men)”, the guidelines are effective immediately and were shared with players on Thursday. Violations could result in severe consequences, including suspension from domestic cricket, IPL exclusion, and reduced central contract payments.
Key Highlights of the Policy
- Mandatory Participation in Domestic Matches
Players must take part in domestic cricket to stay eligible for national selection and retain central contracts. Exceptions require approval from the Chairman of the Selection Committee. - Traveling as a Team
Players must travel with the team for matches and practices. Individual travel with family is discouraged unless pre-approved by the Head Coach and Selection Committee Chairman. - Baggage Restrictions
Players must adhere to baggage limits for domestic and international tours, with any excess baggage costs borne by the individual. - Limitations on Personal Staff
Personal managers, chefs, assistants, or security staff are not allowed on tours unless explicitly approved by the BCCI. - Coordination for Equipment Transfers
Players must work with team management for sending equipment to the Centre of Excellence, Bengaluru, covering any extra costs for independent arrangements. - Commitment to Practice Sessions
All players are expected to stay for the full duration of practice sessions to reinforce dedication and work ethic. - Ban on Personal Endorsements During Tours
Players are prohibited from personal shoots or endorsements during ongoing series to maintain focus. - Family Travel Policy
Families can join players during overseas tours longer than 45 days for one visit per series, limited to two weeks. The BCCI will cover shared accommodations during this period, but other expenses are the player’s responsibility. - Mandatory Participation in BCCI Activities
Players must attend official BCCI shoots, promotional activities, and events to fulfill commitments to stakeholders. - Staying Until Tour Completion
Players must remain with the team until the scheduled end of the series, regardless of early match conclusions.
Context and Motivation
The policy follows India’s Test series defeats, including a 0-3 loss to New Zealand at home and a 1-3 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. By reinforcing discipline and ensuring unity, the BCCI aims to address performance issues and rebuild the team’s competitive edge.
