Raul Castro announced his resignation at the opening of the 8th Congress.
He said he firmly believed in the strength, ideals, and understanding of his compatriots.
The outgoing Communist Party chief said that the country would always be ready to defend the revolution and socialism.
Castro said he was confident of the country’s future and the fulfillment of its mission.
Raul Castro has not announced the name of his successor.
The resignation of Raul Castro will mark the end of the Castro dynasty’s formal leadership, which began with the 1959 revolution.
