General Headquarters (GHQ), through the Ministry of Defence (MoD), has requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a 50% rebate on power costs for Commissioned Officers, according to well-informed sources at NEPRA.
The GHQ, Quarter Master General Branch, Director Works, and Chief Engineer (DG&CE) Army sent this request. According to the message, the GOP set a 25% reduction in power rates for Army officers in 1985. With SRO No. (1)/96, the rebate was increased to 50% on electricity units utilized.
The Ministry of Defence developed a summary for the Cabinet last year headed “NFC- 50% refund to commissioned officers on electricity costs” and forwarded it to the Finance Ministry for discussion.
While reacting on the idea, the Ministry of Finance stated that the suggested draught summary for the Cabinet has been reviewed by the Finance Division (MF wing) and that concerns affecting power bills belong under the responsibility of the Power Division.
The present administration has raised electricity costs by almost 60%, and it is planning a further hike in the base tariff to Rs 0.95 per unit for users beginning February 1, 2022. Consumers that utilize 200-400 units will be disproportionately affected by the subsidy reduction strategy.
