As the new year approaches, Pakistanis can expect mixed news regarding fuel prices, with revisions set to be announced on December 31, 2024, and taking effect on January 1, 2025.

Sources indicate that petrol prices may see a slight decrease, offering some respite to citizens grappling with inflation. Reports suggest a reduction of Rs2 per litre, bringing the price down to Rs250.10 from the current Rs252.10 per litre.

However, not all fuel adjustments are favorable. Diesel prices are projected to rise by Rs3.50 to Rs4 per litre, potentially pushing high-speed diesel to Rs259-260. Light-speed diesel may also increase by around Rs3 per litre, reaching an estimated Rs151.97.

No significant changes have been reported for kerosene oil and other fuels. These price adjustments are part of the government’s regular fortnightly reviews, designed to align local rates with global market trends.

The revised prices will remain in effect until mid-January 2025. While the anticipated reduction in petrol prices is welcome, the expected hike in diesel costs could lead to increased transportation and delivery expenses, potentially offsetting the benefits.

This development underscores the government’s challenge of balancing economic pressures with providing relief to citizens amid volatile global fuel markets.
