DUSHANBE: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani says he will step down and hand over power to a successor if the parties agree to a new presidential election in the country.
Regional leaders from Asian countries met in Tajikistan to promote peace and security in Afghanistan, according to the International News Agency.
Addressing the meeting, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said that he fully supports the holding of new elections as soon as possible and is ready to step down.
Presenting his plan to restore lasting peace in Afghanistan, President Ashraf Ghani added that his greatest honor would be to hand over power to his elected successor, but the Afghan president once again rejected the US proposal to form a caretaker government.
An agreement was reached last year between the United States and the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan, but the new US president deviated from the agreement, signaling an extension of the deadline for the withdrawal of foreign troops and proposing a caretaker government.
Rejecting the US proposal, the Afghan president had said that it could only be possible on my body, but he hinted at holding a new presidential election in the country and formally offered it today.
