Komal Ali Shah, a twenty-five-year-old Pakistani, has been selected to attend the Hiroshima-ICAN Academy on Nuclear Weapons and Global Security in 2021 as the first Pakistani.
The program began in 2019 and will be repeated each year. This year’s participants included Komal, who was one of the 41 picked. She is the first Pakistani to be accepted into this program, as well as the first Pakistani woman.
ICAN is a multi-stakeholder global campaign aimed at mobilizing civil society around the world to advocate the objective of nuclear disarmament.
“I would enhance the topic from an educational aspect by encouraging nuclear disarmament activities,” Komal says. She’d also look into the dangers of nuclear weapons testing on the environment.
Komal says that the humanitarian side of nuclear policies is largely disregarded.
ICAN’s Nuclear Weapons and Global Security program cultivates global leaders who advocate for nuclear disarmament and can contribute concretely to a more peaceful world.
