The BBC has unveiled its prestigious 100 Women for 2024 list, spotlighting two remarkable Pakistani women for their inspiring contributions: singer-songwriter Hadiqa Kiani and activist Dr. Mahrang Baloch. These influential figures join an extraordinary global lineup that includes astronaut Sunita Williams, rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad.
Hadiqa Kiani: A Musical Icon and Humanitarian
Hadiqa Kiani rose to prominence in the 1990s with her versatile voice, earning her place among Pakistan’s musical legends and becoming a celebrated figure in South Asia’s pop music scene. However, her influence extends far beyond music. As a United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador, she has made significant contributions to humanitarian causes.
Following the devastating 2022 floods in Pakistan, Kiani launched the Vaseela-e-Raah initiative to aid victims in the Balochistan and South Punjab regions. She mobilized public support to help displaced families, and by 2023, the project had constructed 370 homes and essential facilities for affected communities.
Dr. Mahrang Baloch: A Voice for Justice
Dr. Mahrang Baloch has emerged as a powerful advocate for human rights, particularly in addressing enforced disappearances in Balochistan. In late 2023, she led a 1,600-kilometer march to Islamabad alongside hundreds of women, demanding answers about missing family members. Despite facing arrests during the journey, she remained steadfast in her mission.
Her activism is carried out under the banner of the Baloch Yakjehti (Unity) Committee, a human rights organization she established. Her impactful work has also earned her a spot on the TIME100 Next 2024 list, recognizing emerging global leaders.
