Hamtramck, Michigan’s biggest city, has become the first city in the United States to have an all-Muslim administration.
For the past 99 years, the community has been dominated by Polish-Americans, but residents believe the population has progressively evolved to include more than half Arab-Americans. And the city’s leaders, now in their 100th year, reflect that transformation.
“It was a historic achievement for Arabs and immigrants that had never happened before,” Hamtramck Mayor Amer Ghalib told Arab News.
“There is no difference because we are all bound by local regulations and the country’s constitution, which contain laws and regulations that we cannot break; all religions teach virtue, and our great Islam emphasizes doing good and forsaking evil, as well as appreciating and treating others properly.” stated the Muslim Mayor
