Pakistan and China on Wednesday resumed the Joint Economic Committee after an 11 years pause to enhance the bilateral relations under border context.
Everything was settled through the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) over the previous eight years, therefore the JEC forum was put on the back burner. Following an 11-year break, both sides have decided to begin negotiations through the JEC forum.
According to an official announcement, Omar Ayub Khan, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, opened the 15th Session of Pakistan-China Joint Economic Committee on Economic, Trade, Scientific & Technical Cooperation with his remarks. He commended the government of China for hosting the 15th Session of JEC after 11 years. The virtual meeting of JEC was co-chaired by Ren Hongbin, Vice Minister of China, and Mian Asad Hayaud Din, Secretary, Economic Affairs Division, Pakistan.
Minister Omar Ayub expressed his pleasure after a 70-year friendship between Pakistan and China, which he described as “unprecedented.” Omar pointed to the 1982 Bilateral Agreement for the Establishment of a Joint Committee for Economic, Trade, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation as the basis of bilateral cooperation to underscore the significance of the ceremony.

Pakistan was one of the first nations to show sympathy with China when the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, and its president paid a visit to Beijing during the outbreak. Similarly, China’s government aided Pakistan in pandemic preparedness. Chinese companies offered the Covid-19 vaccine on a priority basis and provided approximately 4 million doses of vaccine free of charge to boost Pakistan’s mass immunization program.
