ISLAMABAD: PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has called on the National Assembly to deliver justice and investigate the violence against his party during May 9 protests. Speaking on the house floor, Gohar warned against forcing PTI to resume street protests and demanded accountability for what he described as “state injustices” against peaceful demonstrators.

“Our supporters faced unwarranted violence, with bullets fired at unarmed protesters. Such actions are unacceptable in any civilised society,” Gohar stated, urging the formation of an independent commission to probe the events. He criticised the assembly for failing to protect its members and citizens, warning that “oppression ultimately fades, but accountability is necessary to prevent recurrence.”

While the PTI has not formally announced new protests, Gohar hinted at launching a civil disobedience movement if the government fails to meet its demands, including repealing the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

PTI Demands Release of Imran Khan

Speaking outside Parliament, senior PTI leader Omar Ayub demanded the release of Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and other detained party members. He also called for judicial inquiries into the May 9 and November 24 incidents, criticising the government’s lack of transparency.

“Who ordered the violence, and why? There are no answers,” Ayub said, highlighting the deaths of 12 PTI members, the disappearance of over 200 individuals, and the detention of 5,000 supporters. Ayub also demanded the release of Hassan Niazi and other members facing military trials, reiterating PTI’s stance against what he termed “unjust detentions.”

Law Minister Welcomes Opposition Dialogue

During the assembly session, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar praised the opposition’s decision to engage in parliamentary dialogue rather than street protests. “It is a positive step that the opposition has chosen to discuss matters in the house,” Tarar said, urging constructive criticism and fair acknowledgment of progress.

He also highlighted economic improvements, including reduced inflation, lower interest rates, and a rising stock market. Tarar assured that the government remains focused on economic recovery, with PM Shehbaz Sharif holding multiple daily meetings on the subject.

In response to concerns raised by PPP leader Naveed Qamar about the absence of federal ministers during question hour, the deputy speaker promised to address the matter with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Tarar acknowledged the issue, affirming that steps were being taken to improve parliamentary processes.

“Criticism is welcome, but appreciation for progress is equally important,” Tarar added.
