PTI Prioritizes Imran Khan’s Release in Ongoing Talks with Government

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has made the release of its chairman, Imran Khan, its primary demand in negotiations with the government, according to reports citing a member of the ruling party’s committee. The PTI has consistently pushed for Khan’s release in both rounds of talks, rejecting the option of house arrest and insisting on full freedom through an executive order.

During the December 23 and January 2 meetings, PTI emphasized the release of Imran Khan and other detained leaders, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, and Senator Ijaz Chaudhry. However, the government’s committee questioned the demand for an executive order, highlighting that no similar releases occurred during Khan’s tenure for opposition leaders.

Sources indicate that PTI has yet to provide a written charter of demands, despite repeated commitments. The delay is reportedly due to the PTI team needing Khan’s direct approval. The government has facilitated meetings between PTI leaders and Khan, but the party has requested private discussions without oversight.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a government representative, warned that the negotiations could stall if PTI fails to present written demands in the next meeting. Siddiqui also clarified that the government has made no counter-demands or offers, including transferring Khan to house arrest in Banigala.

While PTI has denied demanding Khan’s release through an executive order, its representatives emphasized adherence to constitutional and legal frameworks. The negotiations also touched on other issues, including tracing missing individuals and ending political victimization, though the PTI has faced challenges in providing detailed information for some demands.

The talks remain ongoing, with PTI expected to finalize its charter of demands in the upcoming round of negotiations.
