Pakistan has taken delivery of 28,760 metric tons of imported sugar for Utility Stores.
A second shipment carrying 28,840 metric tons of sugar will also reach Karachi, according to a Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) spokesperson.
The sugar is purchased costs $637.10 per ton, according to TCP sources. At the port, imported sugar is sold at Rs109 per kg, tax and duty-free. The price of Utility Stores will be more than Rs120 per kg, which is Rs30 higher than the official retail price.
If the government tries to sell sugar at Rs85 per kg at Utility Stores, it must provide an Rs35 per kg subsidy.
For a reason, imported sugar has become the most expensive commodity ever purchased.
Earlier, Rs89.26 per kg was the landed cost of 100,000 tons of sugar. Sugar’s ex-mill rate is Rs84.75 per kg, and its retail price is Rs89.75 per kg, according to the government.
