Saudi Arabia’s enforcement of mandatory meningitis and polio vaccinations for Umrah pilgrims has created significant difficulties in Pakistan.

A nationwide shortage of meningitis vaccines, with both (S) and (P) brands unavailable for weeks, has led to a surge in black market sales, where prices have soared beyond Rs10,000. Despite the growing crisis, government authorities have yet to take action, further intensifying the issue for pilgrims.

Reports of counterfeit vaccines further exacerbate the situation, raising concerns about vaccine effectiveness and safety. The Ministry of National Health Services confirms the widespread unavailability of meningitis vaccines nationwide. Efforts to resolve the crisis include plans to import thousands of vials soon.

Meanwhile, obtaining polio vaccination certificates has become cumbersome. Delays occur due to the limited number of authorized personnel able to update certification in the NADRA system. This backlog, coupled with additional fees imposed by NADRA, has burdened pilgrims.

Health officials and experts are urging immediate government action to ensure the availability of authentic vaccines and streamline certification processes. They propose reforms to establish a more efficient vaccination system, enhance regulation, and alleviate financial burdens on pilgrims. The situation may worsen without swift intervention, impacting the Umrah pilgrimage season.
