PTI to Mobilize in Washington During Trump’s Oath-Taking for Imran Khan’s Release
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is set to launch a campaign in Washington on January 20, coinciding with the oath-taking ceremony of US President-elect Donald Trump, aimed at securing the release of its chairman, Imran Khan, according to the sources.
PTI plans to deploy trucks featuring visuals of alleged human rights violations in Pakistan and the role of state institutions. These trucks will navigate open roads in the city, while areas near Capitol Hill and the White House remain restricted for the inauguration event.
The campaign seeks to intensify international pressure on the Pakistani government amid ongoing negotiations with the party. In the US, political advocates continue to voice support for Khan’s release, amplifying calls for global action.
However, insiders note that President-elect Trump and his administration are prioritizing domestic issues, economic challenges, congressional confirmations, and foreign policy shifts over Pakistan’s political matters.
PTI aims to garner additional high-profile statements, like that of Trump ally Richard Grenell, to amplify pressure on Islamabad. Grenell recently tweeted, “Release Imran Khan,” on November 26, when authorities cracked down on PTI protesters in Islamabad. A close confidant of Trump, Grenell has held notable roles, including Acting Director of National Intelligence, and has publicly praised Khan for his outsider approach to politics during his tenure as Pakistan’s Prime Minister.
Grenell drew parallels between Imran Khan and Donald Trump, stating both have faced similar political challenges, including corruption allegations he deems baseless. He emphasized that the Trump administration had a more favorable relationship with Pakistan during Khan’s leadership due to his straightforward communication style and non-political background.
PTI leaders, including Zartaj Gul and Aliya Hamza, welcomed Grenell’s support. PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram clarified that while the party appreciates advocacy for human rights, it does not endorse interference in Pakistan’s internal matters.
Critics of PTI’s US campaign have highlighted contradictions in the party’s stance, pointing out its past anti-American rhetoric. Despite this, PTI’s efforts appear well-funded, with a strong presence both on social media and in public demonstrations.
