Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended a diplomatic overture to the United States, expressing Beijing’s readiness to become a friend and partner to Washington. In a letter to the 2024 annual awards dinner of the National Committee on US-China Relations, Xi emphasized that strong ties between the two nations would benefit not only China and the U.S., but also the world. His remarks were reported by CCTV on Wednesday.

“China is willing to be a partner and friend with the United States. This will benefit not only the two countries but the world,” Xi said.

The president underscored the significance of US-China relations, calling them some of the most important bilateral ties globally, with far-reaching implications for the future of humanity.

However, tensions have persisted between the two powers over national security, ongoing trade disputes, and issues such as China’s activities in the South China Sea and increased military presence around Taiwan. Trade relations between the two countries have particularly soured in recent years, with key conflicts involving electric vehicle restrictions and advanced semiconductor technology.

“China has always approached US-China relations with principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation,” Xi noted, adding that the success of both nations presents opportunities for each other.
