The surveillance cameras in Margalla Hills Islamabad caught the presence of leopard, reports Dawn.
A leopard pauses for a careful look about before resuming its journey through the forested area of the Margalla Hills, which overlooks Islamabad – once an unusual sight, but now recorded and tracked by software and cameras.
The cat, which was once common throughout Pakistan but is becoming rarer as humans encroach on its environment, has been extensively documented by the 20 camera traps strategically placed throughout the wooded hills popular with hikers.
“They’re on our cameras every day,” Asad Hyat, the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board’s chief forest guard, claimed.
Seven leopards have been found in the region, according to software that identifies the big cats’ distinctive rosette patterns, which rangers believe is a positive indication following a dramatic drop in their numbers over the last three decades.
“They’re not as common like they once were because they’re being killed brutally,” IWMB Chair Rina Khan Satti said.
