Since the Syrian civil war, Russia has been a strong supporter of the Syrian ruler Bashar-Al-Assad. Russian intervention in 2014 played a key role in tilting battle in favor of the Syrian regime. Russian forces are present in Syria to support their long-standing ally. Meanwhile, its troop level is increasing with time. Recently, Syrian and Russian officials met to sign an agreement to expand Kheimim Air Base. The base is located in Syria’s northern Latakia province, stationing Russian troops. According to sources, new territory for the base will be used as a medical and rehabilitation center for Russian troops.
