Apple is reportedly preparing to upgrade its smartwatch lineup with the Apple Watch Ultra 3, which is expected to introduce satellite communication features, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. This capability, already available on the iPhone 14 since 2022, allows users to send emergency messages and contact roadside services. However, the Ultra 3 will take this further by enabling iMessage communication without needing an iPhone, Wi-Fi, or cellular connection.

In addition, Apple plans to incorporate blood pressure monitoring in the Ultra 3. While delays have pushed the release beyond its initial 2023 schedule, the company is still working on this feature. Rather than providing exact blood pressure readings, it will alert users to potential hypertension.

Apple is also continuing the development of a non-invasive blood glucose tracker, but it’s unlikely to appear in the 2024 model. These innovations are seen as a response to declining smartwatch sales, as demand for upgrades has waned in recent years. Apple aims to spark renewed interest by introducing features such as satellite messaging and blood pressure monitoring.

In another development, Apple is considering sourcing MediaTek modems for certain Apple Watch models in 2024, marking its first major component purchase from MediaTek. The new modems, supporting 5G Redcap technology, are designed for wearables that don’t require high-speed data connections. These updates aim to strengthen Apple’s position in the wearables market while offering users more practical and advanced features.
