Journalist Fakhar Durrani revealed on Saturday that the military court trial of former ISI Director General (DG), Lt Gen (R) Faiz Hamid, has begun. The trial is based on allegations of engaging in political activities and other charges, with the first hearing held on Friday, December 13.

In his YouTube channel, Durrani reported that Faiz Hamid, accompanied by his lawyer Mian Ali Ashfaq, appeared before the court. During the hearing, Ashfaq requested a five-day adjournment, which was approved by the presiding judge. Durrani speculated that the trial could conclude within a month.

When approached for confirmation, Hamid’s counsel declined to comment, citing the Official Secrets Act.

Durrani also remarked that, if convicted, Hamid might be transferred to Adiala Jail, where former Prime Minister Imran Khan is currently imprisoned. He added that there has been no decision yet on conducting a military trial for Imran Khan, as it could raise concerns internationally about Pakistan’s governance as a security state.

ISPR Statement on Faiz Hamid

According to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Faiz Hamid has been formally charged with engaging in political activities, misusing authority as ISI chief, violating the Official Secrets Act, and causing financial losses. The ISPR noted that his actions compromised state security and interests.

The military’s media wing also stated that Hamid is under investigation for allegedly inciting unrest, including his alleged involvement in the May 9 riots, in collaboration with political interests. The field general court-martial process, initiated on August 12 under the Pakistan Army Act, ensures Hamid is provided with all legal rights.

Background

Faiz Hamid was taken into military custody in August 2024. His arrest stemmed from allegations of land grabbing and stealing valuables during a raid, filed in a Supreme Court petition by Kanwar Moeez Khan, CEO of a housing society.
