In a disturbing case of family violence in Karachi’s Malir district, a young nurse faced severe punishment for wanting to marry her colleague, with her family shaving off part of her hair in opposition to the union.
The incident occurred near Quaidabad, prompting police to register a case and arrest five suspects, including the nurse’s father, mother, and grandmother.
SHO Firasat Hussain reported that the 22-year-old paramedic, employed at a local hospital, filed FIR No. 831/24 at Quaidabad Police Station. The conflict began when she expressed her wish to marry a coworker, leading to physical assault and public humiliation by her family members.
Investigations revealed that the nurse’s parents had separated seven months earlier, and she and her sisters had been living with their mother in a rented house. Her father had been pressuring them to return to his home, escalating tensions after the nurse disclosed her desire to marry.
On December 12, her father reportedly assaulted her and her sisters, prompting them to temporarily seek refuge at a friend’s residence in Green Town. However, on December 20, the family tracked her down, assaulted her again, tore her clothes, and forcibly shaved her head.
The victim stated that she was taken to her father’s house in Quaidabad and wrongfully confined. She managed to contact her lawyer, leading to police intervention and her rescue.
Five suspects, including her father, mother, grandmother, uncle, and a female neighbor, were arrested but later released on bail. Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover further details.
