New Delhi: Apple has banned the manufacture of its products in India after details of irregularities in the payment of wages to workers came to light.
According to a foreign news agency, the Indian state has imposed an immediate ban on the company after delaying the payment of October and November salaries and wages to workers at the Western Corporation in Narsapur, the capital of Karnataka.
Last week, workers at the Western Company staged a violent protest against the non-payment of wages, in which several factory properties were set on fire. A large number of police personnel had to be called in to control the siege, while the company also claimed billions of rupees in damages from the workers’ protest.
To investigate the matter, the Karnataka state government later prepared a report which found evidence of irregularities and delays in the payment of salaries and wages to the workers by the Western company.
Following the government report, Apple has also formed a team of its officers and auditors to investigate the Western company’s case, which will investigate complaints about payments to Western employees.
