A picture of Bangladeshi female cricketer Sanjeeda Islam playing cricket in her wedding dress went viral last week, sparking a controversy. Some are calling it against the country’s culture and Islamic values.

An innocent and seemingly unintentional act by a female Bangladeshi cricketer has created a controversy for her. Her picture went viral on social networking sites in recent days, after which the majority of users appreciated it. Still, some also called it an ‘un-Islamic act’.

Sanjida Islam shared the photo last week. In this photo, she is dressed in an orange bridal dress and is playing on the cricket field. Sanjeeda is also wearing bangles, which match her orange saree. The International Cricket Council also shared a photo of Sanjeeda and wrote, “Clothing, jewellery and the call of cricket.” The ICC retweeted the photo from its Twitter account to millions of people.

Meanwhile, some people in Bangladesh, a country of severe Islam, have sought out religious elements in the image, calling it a “violation of Bangladeshi and Islamic culture.” One user wrote on Facebook, “There is nothing in it that can be done in an Islamic society.” Many users even supported the harsh punishment for the country’s cricketer.

However, most consumers were severe. One user wrote about the image, “It reflects Bangladesh is changing and moving forward.”

Sanjeeda Islam has played 16 ODIs and four T20I matches for Bangladesh. He said he had no intention of being photographed with the bat. She went to the stadium with her husband and saw some children playing and could not get rid of them. Just picked up the phone and started playing. One of his colleagues even took a picture. According to Sanjeeda, she shared the photo on Facebook and Instagram without thinking.
