Electric vehicles charge themselves while driving. It will be possible soon on a section of electrified road in northern Italy.
In a nutshell, Electreon is establishing infrastructure by dumping copper coils beneath the asphalt. Magnetic induction transfers energy directly and wirelessly to the vehicle’s batteries while driving. The system includes a control unit that is located on the side of the electrified road lane. Each electric vehicle participating in the trial has a receiver installed in its chassis.
To carry out the test, ElectReon is collaborating with over ten Italian partners. The most important of these is Brebemi, which operates the toll road. The pilot’s goal is to test how the technology performs on toll roads. Brebemi is footing the bill for the pilot project, while ElectReon will supply the wireless electric road system. The technology, dubbed ‘Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer,’ will be tested on various types of electric vehicles in both stationary and dynamic environments.
