Pristina: The parliament of the UN-administered southern Serbian country of Kosovo has elected Vjosa Osmani, a 38-year-old lawyer, and political leader, as the country’s new president.

Kosovo’s parliament has elected a reformist female political leader and former speaker of parliament, Vjosa Osmani, as its new president following the resignation of President Hashim Thaci in November last year following an international news agency.

In parliament, Vjosa Osmani received 71 votes in support of Prime Minister Albin Kurti and his party, while two opposition parties and a Serbian ethnic minority boycotted, leaving 82 members in the 120-member parliament.

Vjosa Osmani is not Kosovo’s first female president to be elected. Atifa Yahya Agha has previously served as the country’s president from 2011 to 2016.

It should be noted that former President Hashim Thaci was forced to resign in November last year after being accused of war crimes, which has been vacant since then.
