Polio in Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries in the world that are still battling the disease. So far 70 cases of polio have been reported in Pakistan during 2020. For 2019, the number of documented cases was 147. The anti-polio campaign in Pakistan has faced many obstacles; militancy and misinformation are obstacles to its success. Although the government in power is working tirelessly to defeat the disease, there is still a long way to go.
Just as doctors and paramedics who fought CoVID-19 on the front lines, it is essential that we recognize the efforts of polio workers and encourage them. To show his appreciation, Prime Minister Imran Khan had earlier invited Irfanullah, a polio worker, to the Prime Minister’s House and personally thanked him for his services. Irfanullah gained popularity after a video of him going through deep snow to vaccinate children in remote areas went viral.
