Younis Khan Appointed as Afghanistan’s Mentor for 2025 ICC Champions Trophy
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has officially named former Pakistan captain Younis Khan as the mentor for Afghanistan’s cricket team ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Younis Khan, celebrated for amassing 10,099 Test runs in 118 matches during his illustrious career, will guide the team as they prepare for the tournament scheduled from February 19 to March 9, 2025, in Pakistan and Dubai.
A Return to Afghan Cricket
This appointment marks Younis Khan’s second involvement with the Afghanistan cricket team, having previously served as their batting coach in 2022. His return is regarded as a strategic move by the ACB to provide seasoned leadership and expertise as the team gears up for one of the most competitive cricket tournaments.
Younis’ credentials are impeccable, highlighted by leading Pakistan to victory in the 2009 ICC T20 World Cup. He has held various coaching roles, including batting consultant for Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL and head coach of the Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
Afghanistan’s Challenge in the Champions Trophy
Afghanistan faces a formidable challenge in Group B, where they will compete against Australia, South Africa, and England. Group A includes Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh.
With Younis Khan’s mentorship, Afghanistan aims to sharpen its strategy and poise as they take on some of the strongest teams in international cricket.
