The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to hold a pivotal online board meeting today (Friday) to decide the future of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and whether Pakistan will maintain its hosting rights.
This decision will determine the tournament’s venue and whether it will go ahead as planned. The ongoing dispute between Pakistan and India remains a significant factor, with Pakistan strongly opposing the proposed hybrid model, which suggests that matches against India be played at a neutral venue.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made its position clear to the ICC, with Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasizing, “We will endure setbacks, but not at the cost of our dignity.”
While the PCB has reportedly finalized most arrangements for hosting the event, it is demanding an acceptable resolution ahead of the ICC meeting. However, India’s refusal to play in Pakistan continues to complicate matters, creating financial uncertainties for broadcasters.
Financially, Pakistan stands to earn $6 million from the hosting rights, excluding additional revenue from ticket sales and hospitality, but must allocate between $1.2–1.3 million for tournament insurance. In contrast, India enjoys a substantial financial advantage, receiving 38% of the ICC’s annual revenue, which amounts to $90–95 million.
The uncertainty surrounding the Champions Trophy’s scheduling, mainly due to India’s reluctance to travel to Pakistan, has delayed the tournament’s finalization and disrupted broadcasters’ plans. Today’s ICC board meeting is expected to address these concerns and provide clarity on the situation.
