Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has announced that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to resume direct flights to the United Kingdom (UK) by the end of February.

In an interview, Khawaja Asif revealed that PIA also plans to expand its services to 19 European destinations, including cities such as Barcelona and Milan. Flights to the United States and Canada are also part of the airline’s expansion plans.

The minister emphasized that these steps are aimed at enhancing PIA’s value as part of its broader strategy to make the airline more attractive for potential privatization.

PIA has been working to revive its operations and reputation following several challenges in recent years.

Recently, PIA marked a milestone with the successful landing of its first flight to Paris, PK 749, at Charles de Gaulle Airport, after more than four years. The flight was welcomed by Charge d’Affaires Ms. Huzefa Khanum, members of the Pakistani community, as well as PIA and aviation officials.

PIA is currently awaiting formal approval to resume flights to the UK. The airline has submitted a request to the UK Department of Transport and Civil Aviation, under the guidance of CEO Khurram Mushtaq. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has confirmed receiving the letter, which includes a request for the reinstatement of the Third Country Authorization, required for PIA’s operations in the UK.

The airline plans to restart services to major UK cities, including London, Birmingham, and Manchester, as part of its efforts to expand and restore its international network.
