Punjab’s provincial administration appealed to the Supreme Court of Pakistan an earlier judgment by the Lahore High Court (LHC) directing the release of banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Saad Rizvi.
The provincial government appointed Rizvi’s uncle the respondent in the lawsuit and maintained its position that the release order did not meet legal criteria in its petition.
The LHC was given a comprehensive record of the case, according to the petition, and the government’s decision to detain Rizvi was defended.
The Punjab government also asked the Supreme Court to overturn the LHC’s verdict.
Saad Rizvi’s second detention was deemed unlawful by the LHC earlier this month, and he was ordered released.
He was first arrested in April on allegations of inciting his followers to take the law into their own hands and was taken into jail after the TLP staged rallies calling for the French ambassador to be expelled from the country.
