The Punjab government on Wednesday announced the closure of schools across Lahore for three days a week due to smog and deteriorating air quality.
The provincial government’s notification said that all public and private schools in the Lahore district will remain closed every Friday and Saturday.
The Lahore High Court had directed the government to issue a notification to keep schools closed for at least three days a week in the provincial capital.
On Wednesday, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was 265 (extremely unhealthy) while on Tuesday it was 284 (extremely unhealthy).
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has recently revealed that the country’s next major and extreme environmental challenge will be smog.
