On 25 November 2020, 6 Major Generals, including Asif Ghafoor, were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, including General Akhtar Nawaz. It was reported that Major General Akhtar Nawaz, Major General Sardar Hassan Azhar, Major General Salman were promoted. Fayyaz Ghani, Major General Sarfraz Ali, and Major General Muhammad Ali are also included.

Also among those promoted to the rank of lieutenant general is former ISPR chief Major General Asif Ghafoor. It may be recalled that on 15 December 2020, the Federal Cabinet had approved the appointment of Lt. Gen. Akhtar Nawaz as Chairman NDMA.

Muhammad Afzal, former chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDME), spent the last day of his life with his unit in Gujranwala. Lt. Gen. Muhammad Afzal retired from his post on Friday.
