Despite a numerical majority, the Opposition could not stop the pass of government bills in Parliament’s joint sitting. In both houses, the Opposition has 10 votes more than the government benches.
The total number of government members in the joint session of Parliament is 217, out of which 200 were present, and 16 were absent while the Speaker did not participate in the voting process.
The total number of opposition members in Parliament is 226, out of which 190 members of the Opposition attended the joint session, and 36 were absent.
Due to the absence of 36 members of the Opposition, the numerical majority of the Opposition turned into a minority in the joint sitting today, and 7 bills were passed out of which 4 bills were included in the agenda. In contrast, three were included under the supplementary agenda.
It may be recalled that the Opposition has accused the Speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser, of bias, and the bill has been accused of altering the number of members.
