The process for granting a license to Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service provider, is progressing in phases, according to the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). The regulatory body has already issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for Starlink.
Sources within the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) that the next step involves issuing a license to Starlink. The PTA says that it will take approximately six months for Starlink to become fully operational in Pakistan. The company aims to provide direct internet services to Pakistani users through its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.
The company will be required to pay a licensing fee of $640,000 to the PTA. Starlink has already submitted its application for the license, along with its technical and financial plans, as per PTA officials.
The PTA is currently conducting an internal review of all aspects related to Starlink’s licensing. Following the review, the final decision will be made by the PTA chairman and its three members. Sources added that the license is expected to be issued within the next few weeks.
Once the license is granted, Starlink will be able to start accepting bookings from Pakistani customers for its internet services. Additionally, the company will be allowed to install its equipment across the country. Starlink plans to establish two to three ground stations in Pakistan to support its operations.
Starlink’s launch could finally make internet connectivity available in remote areas outside the reach of cable internet or cell towers. As for pricing, it is expected to be cheaper in Pakistan compared to the US and other developed countries.
