ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday granted bail to Bushra Bibi, wife of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, in the Toshakhana-II case. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb of the IHC approved Bushra Bibi’s post-arrest bail plea, requiring her to submit Rs1 million in surety bonds. The court further ordered the authorities to release the former first lady immediately.

This decision came after a special judge had earlier rejected the bail pleas of both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the same case. Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand had conducted the hearing at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, denying their bail applications in the Toshakhana-II case.

The couple was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on July 13 following a new reference related to the Toshakhana scandal, just hours after being acquitted in the Iddat case. The NAB team, led by Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon, arrested them from Adiala Jail.

Their arrests were based on the Toshakhana-II case, in which the couple is accused of illegally retaining gifts from foreign dignitaries. Earlier in February, they were convicted in the Iddat case and sentenced to seven years in prison, along with a fine of Rs500,000 each, after a trial court ruled that their marriage (nikah) was fraudulent. However, their convictions in that case were later overturned by the Islamabad district and sessions court.

The IHC’s ruling granting Bushra Bibi bail marks a significant development in the couple’s ongoing legal battles, which have drawn considerable public attention.
