Rochester, Minnesota: Bahrain’s longest-serving prime minister. Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa has died at the age of 84 after a short illness.

According to Bahrain’s state news agency BBA, Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa died after a few days in Mayo Hospital in the United States. The body of the Prime Minister will be brought back home and buried.

Bahrain‘s King has declared a week of national mourning over the death of Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman. At the same time, ministries and government departments will remain closed for three days.

Born on November 24, 1935, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has been Prime Minister since 1970. A year before Bahrain’s independence, and has held the record for the most extended term as prime minister in the world.

He has also served as the head of the country’s state council and the Supreme Defense Council.
