Pakistan ranks fourth in the list of rice exporting countries, a spokesman for the agriculture department said. Furthermore, he added that the world’s largest rice exporters include Nigeria, Iran, China, the Philippines, and Indonesia, while rice exporters Major countries include India, Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, Brazil, and Uruguay.
The spokesman said that rice is the second largest cash crop in Pakistan after cotton. The rice crop is grown on 11% of the total cultivated area of Pakistan. However, Pakistan earns billions of rupees in foreign exchange annually by exporting rice. He said that out of the total cultivated area of rice crop, 71% is cultivated in Punjab and 29% in other provinces.
A spokesman of the agriculture department said that rice crop is being cultivated in Punjab by cultivating 4.398 million acres of land. He said that Rice Research Institute has introduced 22 varieties of rice out of which 13 varieties are being cultivated in Punjab.
He said that out of the production of 6 million tonnes of rice. While Pakistan exports 1.54 million tonnes of rice to different countries of the world. On the other hand, Pakistan has reached the fourth position on the list by exporting 4 million tonnes of rice to different countries.
