After a year of adopting a mobile manufacturing program, federal energy minister Hammad Azhar declared that Pakistan manufactured around 70% of smartphones.

This was mentioned by Azhar at the introduction of Samsung’s first domestically made smartphone, which was produced at Samsung’s Port Qasim facility in a joint venture with Lucky Group.

He went on to remark that Samsung’s debut was a result of the DIRBS (Device Identification Registration & Blocking System) system’s success three years ago. The ministry championed policies and signed agreements for local mobile manufacturing.

He claims that the government’s next goal is to sell domestically manufactured cellphones from Pakistan. He also revealed that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has collected over Rs135 billion in DIRBS taxes.
